Nexans publishes the environmental performance of its cables via the PEP EcoPassport-program
Jan 16, 2023Sustainable building is more important than ever, so the demand for sustainable building products is growing rapidly. It is a challenge for installers and consultants to determine the environmental performance of cables. That's why Nexans has subjected a large part of its product range to a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and created an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for these products.
Nexans uses the international PEP EcoPassport program for this purpose. This is the independent reference program for Environmental Product Declarations for the electrical, electronic and HVAC industries. Products are assessed at every stage of their life cycle against a set of specific rules, requirements and guidelines, also known as Product Category Rules (PCR). These include carbon footprint, energy consumption - both in production and during long-term use - water and resource consumption.
“ The PEP EcoPassport program allows us to offer an independently verified and certified environmental declaration of our products. This way, together with other manufacturers, we ensure transparency about the environmental performance of industrial products and prevent a proliferation of eco-labels. ”
Pascal Place
Marketing Manager at Nexans Nederland & BelgiumThe objective is to have the Dutch economy fully circular by 2050. This means that all raw materials must be reusable. We are still a long way from achieving this goal. The PEP EcoPassport is a useful tool to compare the environmental data of industrial products.
Circular symbol at Technische Unie
The PEP EcoPassport can be downloaded from our website and is now also available via 2ba.nl.
Our products with a PEP EcoPassport are also included in Technische Unie's circular symbol program. On their website these products can be recognized by the circular icon.
Our approach to protecting the environment
Nexans is convinced of the need to protect the planet for current and future generations. The environmental approach is one of the three top priorities of our CSR policy. We have set very high standards and launched a joint innovation project to meet our triple objective:
- reduce environmental impact
- promote the circular economy
- combat climate change.
Partner in the Circular Plastics Alliance
In 2022, we became a member of the Circular Plastics Alliance, in which partners help each other to design and implement solutions that will encourage more plastic to be collected and then reused in new products. This year we will start the first pilot projects in the Netherlands and Belgium with which we will actively contribute to a more circular economy.
